A Beginner's Guide to Macramé

Ready to dive headfirst into the mesmerizing world of macramé? Brace yourself for a knot-ty adventure that's as fun as it is fabulous! Macramé has been making waves lately, and it's time for you to join the party. Let us be your crafty guide as you buckle up, grab your cords, and get ready to create!

1. The Basics: Let's start with the basics, shall we? Macramé is all about tying knots like a rockstar. Picture yourself as a knot aficionado, getting cozy with the square knot, half hitch knot, and double half hitch knot. Practice makes perfect, so take it easy, start small, and enjoy the rhythm of your knots. Before you know it, you'll be creating wonders with your nimble fingers!

Square Knot: Cut two pieces of cord of equal length, align the pieces, and fold them in half to create a loop at one end. This loop will be used to attach your cords to a dowel or other hanger. Next position the cords so that you have four strands: two outer cords (far right and far left) also known as your working cord and two inner cords known as the filling cord. Take the right outer cord and cross it over the two inner cords, forming a “4” shape. Pass the left outer cord over the right cord (the tail of the “4”) and then under the two inner cords and back through the loop of the “4” on the right cord. Pull the left outer cord gently to tighten the first half of the square knot. Now, take the outer cord and cross it over the two inner cords, forming a backwards “4” shape. Pass the right outer cords over the left cord (the tail of the backward “4”) and then under the two inner cords and back through the loop of the “4”. Gently pull the right outer cord to tighten the second half of the square knot. Make sure to keep the tension consistent. To complete the square knot, give both the right and left outer cords a final gentle pull. This will tighten the knot and create a symmetrical square shape. Repeat these steps to create more square knots, or continue with your desired macramé pattern.

Tip: Practice the square knot on shorter cords or rope first to get the hang of it before starting a larger macramé project.

Half Hitch Knot: Cut the cord to your desired length. You’ll need at least two cords for this knot—one working cord and one or more holding cords. Take the working cord and lay it over the holding cord(s) to form a loop. Pass the working cord's end under the holding cord(s) and pull it through the loop. Pull the working cord gently to tighten the half hitch knot around the holding cord(s). The knot should rest snugly against the previous knot if you're working in a row. To create multiple half hitch knots, repeat that process, always working with the same working cord. You can also switch to a different working cord and alternate sides to create a decorative pattern.

Tip: If you're using multiple holding cords, make sure to keep them parallel and evenly spaced to maintain a neat look.

Double Half Hitch Knot: Tying a double half hitch knot in macramé is a variation of the regular half hitch knot and adds more stability to your projects. It is often used to create a strong and secure diagonal line, attach cords to a ring or dowel, or add texture to your designs. Cut the cords to your desired length. You'll need at least two cords for this knot—one working cord and one or more holding cords. Take the holding cord and place it over the working cord(s) to form a loop. Pass the working cord's end over and around the holding cord(s) and pull it through the loop created. This is similar to a regular half hitch knot. Gently pull the working cord to tighten the first half hitch knot around the holding cord(s). Place the working cord over the holding cord(s) to form a loop. Pass the working cord's end under the holding cord(s) and pull it through the loop. Gently pull the working cord to tighten the second half hitch knot. To complete the double half hitch knot, give both the first and second half hitch knots a gentle pull at the same time. This will secure the knot firmly in place. You can continue creating double half hitch knots in a row or switch to a different working cord and alternate sides to create a decorative pattern.

Tip: You can use different colored cords or alternate between colors to create eye-catching designs.

2. Supplies:

Now, let's gather our crafting tools! You'll need macramé cord or rope—we love the Lion Brand Mac-Re-Me Yarn and Herrschners Macramé Sparkle Yarn. A good pair of sharp scissors is a must-have for a nice clean cut. Keep masking tape handy to wrap around the cord before cutting to prevent the cord from fraying. If you want to level up your craft game, consider a macramé board or clipboard to keep things stable and organized. A macramé board is commonly made from foam, particleboard, or pressed cardboard. It’s a flat work surface that you can pin your project to. These boards are lightweight and often have a grid marked in inches or centimeters. You will want a measuring tape or ruler for precision, but, we're all about having fun, so embrace the quirks, too!
