History of Crochet Blog

Hey there, fellow crocheters! As we celebrate National Crochet Month, it’s important to take a look back at the fascination history of crocheting and how it has evolved over the years.

Crochet has been around for hundreds of years! Some people think it started in South America or China, while others believe it developed independently in different parts of the world. But we do know that crochet really took off in France in the 16th century. Someone had the bright idea to use a tiny hook-like needle to create intricate lacework. They called it “tambouring” and it quickly caught on throughout Europe.

Fast forward to the early 19th century, when crochet made its way to America. This is when things really started to take off! Patterns for all sorts of crochet creations from dollies and to cozy blankets, and even clothing began to appear in women’s magazines.

In the early 20th century, crochet experienced another surge in popularity thanks to the Arts and Crafts movement! This movement emphasized the importance of handmade crafts making crochet a creative and artistic outlet. This is when crochet really became more than just a hobby; it was an opportunity to create beautiful and unique pieces that showcased individual creativity.

And the rest, as they say, is history! Crochet has continued to evolve over the years, adapting to changing trends and styles. Today, there are endless patterns and designs available for crocheters of all skill levels. Materials have become more accessible to people as well.
